A HARMONY OF THE GOSPEL ACCOUNTS OF JESUS’ CRUCIFIXION AND RESURRECTION (Continued)

Darkness Covers the Land

Matthew 27:45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.

(4th  statement) –  “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”) Jesus Asks Why God Had Forsaken Him

Matthew 27:46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying:

Matthew 27:47 Some of them who stood there, when they heard it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.” 48 Immediately one of them ran, and took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him a drink. 49 The rest said, “Let him be. Let’s see whether Elijah comes to save him.”

(5th statement – “I am thirsty”)

Jesus Thirsts and Is Given Vinegar to Drink

John 19:28 After this, Jesus, seeing that all things were now finished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said:

John 19:29 Now a vessel full of vinegar was set there; so they put a sponge full of the vinegar on hyssop, and held it at his mouth.

(6th statement – “It is finished”). Announces the Completement of His Mission

John 19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said:

(7th statement – “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” )

Jesus Dies for Our Sins

John 19:30 He bowed his head and Luke 23:46 crying with a loud voice, said:

Having said this, he breathed his last.

Matthew 27:51 Behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from the top to the bottom. The earth quaked and the rocks were split. 52 The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; 53 and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection, they entered into the holy city and appeared to many. Luke 23:47 When the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, “Certainly this was a righteous man.” Mark 15 39 Matthew 27:54 and those who were with him watching Jesus, when they saw the earthquake, and the things that were done, feared exceedingly, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God.”

Luke 23:48 All the multitudes that came together to see this, when they saw the things that were done, returned home beating their breasts. 49 All his acquaintances, and the women who followed with him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things. Mark 15:40 among whom were both Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome; 41 who, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and served him; and many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.

Jesus’ Side Is Pierced, Letting Out Blood and Water

John 19:31 Therefore the Jews, because it was the Preparation Day, so that the bodies wouldn’t remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a special one), asked of Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. 32 Therefore the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who was crucified with him; 33 but when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was already dead, they didn’t break his legs. 34 However one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. 135 He who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, that you may believe. 36 For these things happened, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, “A bone of him will not be broken.” 37 Again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they pierced.”

Jesus Is Buried

John19:38 After these things, Mark15:42 When evening had now come, because it was the Preparation Day, that is, the day before the Sabbath 23:50 Behold, a man named Joseph, who was a Mark 15:43 prominent member of the council, Luke 23:50 a good and righteous man  John 19:38 being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews Luke 23:51 (he had not consented to their counsel and deed), from Arimathaea, a city of the Jews, who was also waiting for the Kingdom of God: 52 this man went to Pilate, and asked for Jesus’ body. Mark 15:44 Pilate marveled if he were already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked Matthew 27:60 And he rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, and departed. 61 Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the tomb. Luke 23:55 The women, who had come with him out of Galilee, followed after, and saw the tomb, and how his body was laid. 56 They returned, and prepared spices and ointments. On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.

Jesus’s Tomb Is Sealed and Guarded

Matthew 27:62 Now on the next day, which was the day after the Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees were gathered together to Pilate, 63 saying, “Sir, we remember what that deceiver said while he was still alive:

Matt 27:64 Command therefore that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest perhaps his disciples come at night and steal him away, and tell the people, ‘He is risen from the dead;’ and the last deception will be worse than the first.” 65 Pilate said to them, “You have a guard. Go, make it as secure as you can.” 66 So they went with the guard and made the tomb secure, sealing the stone.

Jesus Is Risen

The Risen Savior

Matthew 28:2 Behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from the sky, and came and rolled away the stone from the door, and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. 4 For fear of him, the guards shook, and became like dead men.

Mark16:9 Now when he had risen early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons.  John 20:1 Mary Magdalene went early, while it was still dark, to the tomb, and saw the stone taken away from the tomb.

John 20:2 Therefore she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have laid him!” 3 Therefore Peter and the other disciple went out, and they went toward the tomb. 4 They both ran together. The other disciple outran Peter, and came to the tomb first. 5 Stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths lying, yet he didn’t enter in. 6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and entered into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying, 7 and the cloth that had been on his head, not lying with the linen cloths, but rolled up in a place by itself. 8 So then the other disciple who came first to the tomb also entered in, and he saw and believed. 9 For as yet they didn’t know the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10 So the disciples went away again to their own homes.

John 20:11 But Mary was standing outside at the tomb weeping. So, as she wept, she stooped and looked into the tomb, 12 and she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head, and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. 13 They told her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”

John 20:13 She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I don’t know where they have laid him.” 14 When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, and didn’t know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her:

John 20:15 She, supposing him to be the gardener, said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” 16 Jesus said to her:

She turned and said to him, “Rabboni!” which is to say, “Teacher!”

John 20:17 Jesus said to her:

John 20:18 Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples, Mark 16:10 those who had been with him, John 20:18 that she had seen the Lord, and that he had said these things to her Mark 16:11 When they heard that he was alive, and had been seen by her, they disbelieved.

Matthew 28:1 Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn on the first day of the week, Luke 24:1 they and some others, Mark 15:47 Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of Joses, Mark 16:1 and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, that they might come and anoint him.  Very early on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen.

Mark 16:3 They were saying among themselves, “Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?” 4 for it was very big. Looking up, they saw that the stone was rolled back.

Luke 24:3 They entered in, and didn’t find the Lord Jesus’ body. Mark 16:5 They saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe, and they were amazed. 24:4 It happened, while they were greatly perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling clothing.  Luke 24:5 Becoming terrified, they bowed their faces down to the earth. They said to them, Mark 6:6 “Don’t be amazed. You seek Jesus, the Nazarene, who has been crucified. Luke 24:5 “Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6 He isn’t here, but He is risen, Matthew 28:6 just like he said. Luke 24:6  Remember what he told you when he was still in Galilee,  7 saying that  the Son of Man must be delivered up into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again?” Mark 16:6 He is not here.” 6 Behold, the place where they laid him! Matthew 28:7 Go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has risen from the dead, and behold, he goes before you into Galilee; there you will see him.’ Behold, I have told you.” 24:8 They remembered his words,8 They departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy,  Mark 16:8 for trembling and astonishment had come on them. They said nothing to anyone; for they were afraid Matthew 28:8 and ran to bring his disciples word and told all these things to the eleven, and to all the rest. 10 Now they were Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James.

Mattew 28:9 As they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying:

They came and took hold of his feet, and worshiped him.

Matthew 28:10 Then Jesus said to them:

The other women with them told these things to the apostles. 11 These words seemed to them to be nonsense, and they didn’t believe them.

The Coverup

Matthew 28:11 Now while they were going, behold, some of the guards came into the city, and told the chief priests all the things that had happened. 12 When they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave a large amount of silver to the soldiers, 13 saying, “Say that his disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept. 14 If this comes to the governor’s ears, we will persuade him and make you free of worry.” 15 So they took the money and did as they were told. This saying was spread abroad among the Jews, and continues until this day.

Jesus Appears to Two Disciples on the Road to Emmaus

Mark 16:12 After these things he was revealed in another form to two of them, as they walked, on their way into the country. Luke 24:13 to a village named Emmaus, which was sixty stadia from Jerusalem. 14 They talked with each other about all of these things which had happened. 15 It happened, while they talked and questioned together, that Jesus himself came near, and went with them. 16 But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17 He said to them:

18 One of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who doesn’t know the things which have happened there in these days?” Luke 24:19 He said to them:

Luke 24:19 They said to him, “The things concerning Jesus, the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people; 20 and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. 21 But we were hoping that it was he who would redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened. 22 Also, certain women of our company amazed us, having arrived early at the tomb; 23 and when they didn’t find his body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. 24 Some of us went to the tomb, and found it just like the women had said, but they didn’t see him.”

Luke 24:25 He said to them:

27 Beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he explained to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. 28 They drew near to the village, where they were going, and he acted like he would go further. 29 They urged him, saying, “Stay with us, for it is almost evening, and the day is almost over.”

Luke 24:19 He went in to stay with them. 30 It happened, that when he had sat down at the table with them, he took the bread and gave thanks. Breaking it, he gave to them. 31 Their eyes were opened, and they recognized him, and he vanished out of their sight. 32 They said one to another, “Weren’t our hearts burning within us, while he spoke to us along the way, and while he opened the Scriptures to us?” 33 They rose up that very hour, returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and those who were with them, 34 saying, “The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!” 35 They related the things that happened along the way, and how he was recognized by them in the breaking of the bread.  Mark 16:13 They didn’t believe them, either.

John 20:19 When therefore it was evening, on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were locked where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Mark 16:14 he was revealed to the eleven themselves as they sat at the table, John 20:19 Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them:

Luke 24:37 But they were terrified and filled with fear, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. Luke24:38 He said to them:

40 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. 41 While they still didn’t believe for joy, and wondered, he said to them:

42 They gave him a piece of a broiled fish and some honeycomb. 43 He took them, and ate in front of them. 44 He said to them:

“This is what I told you, while I was still with you, that all things which are written in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms, concerning me must be fulfilled.”

45 Then he opened their minds, that they might understand the Scriptures. 46 He said to them:

Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, 47 and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things.

John 20:20 The disciples therefore were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus therefore said to them again:

John 20:22 When he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them:

John 20:24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, wasn’t with them when Jesus came. 25 The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the Lord!” 25 But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”

John 20:26 After eight days again his disciples were inside, and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, the doors being locked, and stood in the midst.  27 Then he said to Thomas:

28 Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” John 20:29 Jesus said to him:

John 20:30 Therefore Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written, that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.
